EDIGMA/DISPLAX: AMTC MUSEUM

OVERVIEW
Located in Edifício Alfândega, an historical building with a privileged sight of Oporto’s riverside, the “Communicate” exhibition, held permanently in Museum of Transports and Communications, constitutes a benchmark in Portugal, not only for the abundance of information and interesting themes addressed, but mostly for the innovative and engaging way how contents are presented.
Resulting from a joint effort of architects, educational services, consultants and technological companies involved, this project truly functions as a hole. Every area, decoration and solution remains coherent with the main story and message.
Rather than an amalgam of technical data and theoretical knowledge, Museum of Transports and Communications pretends to deliver a multisensory experience to visitors, taking them into a journey that they’ll never forget!
UNESCO HERITAGE
In the first corridor, 10 pairs of screens were placed on the walls, presenting slideshows of images and descriptions of the 10 UNESCO World Heritage locations in Douro region.
Simultaneously, an agenda with relevant events is also displayed. This way, people can quickly figure what is happening there that deserves a visit.
Contents are sponsored by Fundação Hispano-Portuguesa Rei D. Afonso Henriques.

ANIMALS’ BEHAVIOR
With animals’ communication behavior as its main theme, an interactive table including a customized wood structure, allows the exploration of images, and presents a defying quiz (with versions in Portuguese and English), referring to the interactions and communication processes of various Iberian animals.
The horizontal orientation of the screen promotes the interaction between users, thus contributing to the creation of a collaborative environment.

ANIMALS’ SOUNDS
To explore the audio dimension of this exhibition, an interactive application lets visitors listen to sounds produced by bats, partridges, crickets, deers and other animals.
Among these digital sound players, there are also images and texts regarding the corresponding species.

7 BILLION OTHERS
In the next area, the focus is directed to the communication processes and elements. First, visitors are “welcomed” by a virtual confessionary.
In a private and cozy area, people are able to leave their testimony, spreading a video message through “7 billion Others” platform, a project by GoodPlanet Fondation, supported by BNP Paribas.

LANGUAGES
Language is the central dimension in communication. So, it had to be a solution that addressed this theme. As a result, EDIGMA created an interactive screen, with an application that associated languages to a World Map.
This way, you can get a geographical notion of where each language is talked all over the World, where the endangered languages are still present and, meanwhile, get generic information about each country.

SOCIAL NETWORKS
Since communication is all about social relationships and dynamics, social networks couldn’t be forgotten.
Taking this into account, another interactive screen was deployed, performing an application with this museum’s tweets and Facebook posts.
Websites related to the importance of words, individual stories and personal testimonies were also accessible.

VIDEO CONFERENCE
Going to another room, visitors will find 6 PCs with a video conference system.
By using this well-known communication channel, people can freely communicate with their beloved ones and, for instance, recommend a visit to the Museum of Transports and Communications.

V STUDIO
RTP is, undoubtedly, a landmark in our country’s communications panorama, a key element of Portuguese culture.
Taking this premise into account, a PC with access to RTP Virtual Museum was made available.
Integrated in a scenography that represents a TV studio, this solution enables the recording of a report, allowing visitors to impersonate the role of a journalist.
Accept the challenge of “diving” in the endless patrimony of a TV channel with more than 50 years of bright history!

QR CODES
Marked on the museum’s walls, visitors will find many QR Codes, linking to the websites of Association for the Museum of Transports and Communications and its partners.
In an era when nearly everyone has a smartphone with Internet connection, the mobile dimension of this project shouldn’t be neglected.
The QR Codes emerged, therefore, as the ideal solution to fulfill this claim, in the most cost-effective way.
