Book Jacket Redesign: Lord of the Files

Book Jacket Redesign
Book Jacket Design is one of the learning objectives for a first year Print Design course at Heritage College. Deciding to go with a minimalist approach, creatively I knew I wanted to keep the design simple but appealing; after all, the first thing we notice about a book is its cover.

Illustrations were designed in Adobe Illustrator. I first used vector outlines in a simple black stroke. Next, I brought the images into Photoshop to use my favorite drawing brushes combined with my Bamboo Tablet and pen. I attempted to give the colors a 'faded' appearance, adding some opacity in certain areas and using blending methods to ensure a smooth transition between colors.

Once the images were colored and brushed in to my satisfaction, I then imported all the files into Adobe InDesign for the final layout organization. Because of the book's plot, I opted for a rough-looking typeface for the title, but kept the remainder of the body text to a simple sans-serif in a simple black.
