Myth of the Mermaid and Some Old Man Lost at Sea
Illustrated by Georgia Crowley
Words by DJ Dave and the Beatific Band
The man in a bucket with
nowhere to go
his only companion,
a bottle he stowed
combats the current
as time trails along
whilst drunken strumming
slurs into song
no plotted course
no sense of direction
no sense of light
no means of detection
destined for darkness,
the old man must wait,
for his newfound companions,
are grey as of late
landlock lovers
spin lovely lies
but the submerged beauty has truth in her eyes
and the world won't know her
as long as she knows
the evils of creatures who
walk upon toes
sullied her home and now she
must wander
the vast 7 seas, a wild blue
yonder
off in the ocean she
noticed a man
the bottle runs dry and the man
starts to fret
since his vessels new wet bar
is no longer wet
fooled as a friend when they
only saw bait-
now assured that their daggers
can crack through his crate
leave him for dead, a Neptune
bound soul
though destruction
of man was never her goal
despite liquid divine
absorbing man's toll
when sea faring mothers bring
20 ton shoals
the golden haired
goddess hath put him
at ease
too far gone to see
where they're bound
harmonies carry the
salt crusted breeze
with the picking of
strings and the sirens
sweet sound
The End
The Process
I drew in pencil and then traced over the pencil with a 1.0 Micron pen to solidify the lines and create varying line width and clarity.
I used CamScan to scan my Zine drawings and from there touched them up in Adobe Illustrator as needed. For the most part I kept the style a bit more rough. We used rough string to hand-bind the Zine. Though it took more effort, the rough string binding offers an organic finish to the Zine. We distributed the Zine to friends, family, and a small Zine store in San Francisco.
Takeaway
This collaboration reminded me how satisfying it is to work with others to transform ideas into life. I am grateful to have friends who creatively motivate me.
