Walt
A tribute to one of the greatest pioneers in animation.
After reading Walt Disney: An American Original by Bob Thomas, I wanted to pay tribute to the man who defined modern animation. I've always been a Disney fan, but I never knew how interesting Walt himself was until I read the book.
I wanted to give the final image the appearance of being a rough sketch, as if it was still in the process of being cleaned up. To accomplish this, I drew the character's underlines on a piece of paper and then used transparent paper to finish it up. This way, I had two distinct images that would allow me to layer the final design.
I was able to use Illustrator to Image Trace both outlines and provide each a different color. I wanted the underlines to be lighter than the top layer so that the image wasn't confusing. I did realize, though, that I accidentally drew him left handed, so I had to mirror the image to fix this. I also placed the outlines on a background that looks like rough tan paper to give it a bit more of a texture.
Finally, I added a popular quote from Walt to complete the look. I also created a landscape oriented version of the image to be used in different circumstances.
