Atys Mead Co.
Fictional Branding and Label Design  /  Personal Work  /  2019

I love label designs for booze, wine, and beer. One of my favorite things to do when I’m at the store is walk around and admire all the different bottles and boxes. I put that excitement towards my own fictional branding project for a local meadery, named Atys Mead Co, after Atys (or Attis), a figure in Phrygian/Greek mythology.

Mead is one of the oldest–if not the oldest–alcoholic beverages in history. For that reason, I wanted to build the concept of the brand around an ancient mythological figure. One with character, and one with symbolic ties to nature. Atys, who was born from an almond tree, and whose death and subsequent rebirth are said to represent "the fruits of the earth which die in winter only to rise again in the spring," seemed a perfect fit.

For the brand illustration, I juxtaposed a flowering almond branch (as a reference to Atys) with honey bees (honey is the main ingredient in mead). The fonts, type, pattern, and layout were created with the idea of having allusions to antiquity (the Roman-inspired serif), while still being modern and sleek.
