Most people know Audrey Hepburn as a movie star and a professional attractive person. What most people don’t know is that she lived through WWII.
-
After the Nazis invaded the Netherlands, Audrey had to use the name “Edda” in order to avoid sounding English, which was dangerous. Her half-brother was sent to a Nazi labor camp. So, she began performing ballet concerts to raise money for the Dutch resistance. Her family’s entire fortune was lost during the war.

Her traumatic experiences during WWII inspired her humanitarian efforts. She went on so many missions she was finally awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. During a mission to South Sudan she was quoted saying, “I saw one glaring truth: These are not natural disasters but man-made tragedies for which there is only one man-made solution - peace.”
