Tire retread "caps" are adhered to the center "donut", or carcass. Applying adhesive was tricky since it is the consistency of molasses. The customer required a reduction in the current amount because too much was being applied with the current system, resulting in waste.
The new system applied adhesive using pnuematically operated adhesive valves, since the adhesive could explode or ignite from any electricity. Although PLC controlled, all machine logic was used air signals, including Emergency stops. Rotary and linear motion were air powered using air motors and pnuematic cylinders.
Adhesive use was reduced up to % compared to the previous system.
