Brief:
To conduct design research followed by design activities for a Financial Literacy curriculum that would eventually be aimed for use by the over 1.2 million refugees in Uganda.
Project Details:
Intensive 4 weeks of design research was done to first go through the numerous different curriculum already out there and then going to the field (3 of the biggest refugee camps in Uganda) to understand the existing practices around finance management and to co-create tools that are easier to understand and use for the target groups. Several different groups, that represented the different levels of skills that people have, were met. They included groups of business owners, heads of households without jobs, young adults who take the responsibility of the households and also adolescents.

Following this, it was realised that the reason the existing curricula were not working was because it was not meeting the different needs. A new curriculum was designed using existing content that would start with a pre-training assessment that helps the facilitator group people with similar skills together and then start with the 10-12 session training. The curriculum was divided into two sections: Foundation and Advanced. The topics covered in the foundation ('savings', 'budgeting' etc.) were compulsory for each group and the topics in the advanced level could be chosen by the group members, for example the small business owners could ask for 'loans and investments' whereas a groups of housewives could ask for 'income generating activities' or 'mobile money'.

A participant workbook was designed with templates for various different finance management related tools. For the trainers, flip charts and scenarios cards along with various different role play themes were designed and developed to help them provide effective training.
