Portugal, 1973: A poster for a film-concert
The final montage
The job was to do an illustration for an e-flyer to promote this film-concert for LEMUR - Associação Cultural. The film by Artur Varela and the concert by John Call Da Train a jazz duet by Paulo Alexandre Jorge and Ulisses Morais Teixeira.

I've started to think about the film I saw.
"Portugal 1973" is a very intriguing project by the Portuguese artist Artur Varela.
Artur directed those shortcuts in between '73 and '76. And this was picked up by Imprensa Canalha
which is a portuguese independent label.
Almost with no sound, the film is full of provocation although the language used is totally clean and direct. There's no other will rather than to show a look.
It's powerful.
So something was inside the way Artur observes things. In the way between the frame and the eye.
Something had to be with the eyes.

I picked up 3 touched animals... Touched by the man. With the hands and with the eyes.
A pig, a donkey, a lobster.
They are looking at us right now!

I've used a mid sized handmade paper (94cmx60cm) and made a pencil color draw.
But before I made some research on these animals using the fabulous flickr. I usually do this when I can't have  do local research!
Then I started to draw in my notebook which I personally love to use and carry with me.
So I started to test the central figure: the donkey. Then the lobster and the pig in the end.
As said before my intention was to connect the viewer and the eyes of these animals. I had to give this brighter look to their eyes.
They stare at me all the time. In silence!

I loved to do this for LEMUR!
