Background
Microsoft created the Data Insights Summit to be the first Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft Excel user conference designed especially for the business analyst community. This would be the first year for the event.

Challenge
Microsoft wanted to do something special to engage and entertain the attendees of this unique event.  They wanted the theme of the event to be all about the data, the cutting edge technology that quantifies it, and a sense of exploration.

Solution
We designed a science fiction themed, narrative-driven interactive scavenger hunt, with a companion app.

Crafting the Experience

At the Data Insights Summit, we staged illustrated character posters and angry, unruly 'Databyters' around the convention center at key points of interest, such as industry leader keynotes, workshops, and trade booths.  Attendees could follow the story of The Datanauts and assist them by literally capturing the unruly Databyters with their Datanauts app on their phone, rewarding the player with narrative content, a gamified points system, and a public facing leaderboard.
