ATypI conference booklet

Part 3 design practise module, University of Reading

Design brief

– To make a ‘design conference’ handbook
– To design a typographic device and conference brand
– To write a design specification

ATypI London is taking place at St Bride Library in London next year. ATypI members are an unusually astute audience. They care a great deal about type, typography, design and all aspects of book production. They are typically ‘movers and shakers’ in the type and design community, and have paid a hefty conference fee to get together in another country for three or four days of design-related talks and networking with colleagues. Your handbook needs to be their ‘friend’ during the conference. It needs to look good, feel good, and most importantly, work in terms of accessing the information conference goers will need throughout the four or five days of the conference, ie. what happens where and when. Additionally, many of the conference goers will want to keep the book as a souvenir of the talks, and the London ‘Type Walk’ on the last day of the conference.

Deliverables:
– AtypI conference booklet
– Design specification (including conference identity and how the brand can be implemented)

ATypI front cover – 260gsm linen white card, 148 x 210mm dimensions
I created a clean, professional brand with strong contrasting colours of the vibrant red and deep navy blue. I decided to use spiral binding as it allows the user to completely fold the pages round. This is particularly useful if the user doesn’t want to lose their place.

On the inside cover I used green to add an element of surprise when the reader turned the page.

I created a simple floor plan of the library using Adobe Illustrator CS5.

Each new section of the booklet has a red title page on the right with a blue heading in the top left corner.

The speakers are listed in alphabetical order with a small picture of the speaker in the left column of the page.

For the timetable section I used blue text for the ‘Type-tech forum’ timetable and red text for the ‘Main programme’ timetable. This reduces the risk of the reader getting the two timetables mixed up.

All the images in the booklet have a blue tint to suit the brand. Each location in the ‘Letter ing walk’ section has a number next to them which corresponds with a map of the route.

Here is a map of the ‘Lettering walk’ route with all the places marked on. I made the map in Adobe Illustrator CS5.

I designed a map of the conference’s location situated at the back of the booklet for quick and easy access.

ATypI back cover – 260gsm linen white card
I listed all of the speakers names on the back cover so the reader can instantly see which designer’s are taking part.
