The brief of the Authorial Practice Project revolves around identifying a specific issue within my own personal area of interest, and then develop and conceptualise my own brief, as well as answer the brief. I had to use a model for practice-based projects to execute a conceptually driven print design/ illustration body of work.

African penguins are highly endangered due to several contributing factors. The African penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) is a non-profit organisation that depends heavily on donations and volunteers in order to care for and provide medical supplies for the rescued penguins (and other birds). They do not have a set record of consumers other than their Facebook page followers, and they have very little means of connecting to potential future donors. They also have a constant lack of funds.

Project penguin is awareness and educational-based family event, aiming to inform the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary’s consumers, not only about the endangered penguins but also the rehabilitation and treatment of these animals. They also wish to gather valuable consumer information at this event, such as the contact information of possible future donors and volunteers.

The strategy to get funding and information from the target audience involves attracting them to an event called “Project Penguin: A Family Reunion” at the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS). This is done by inviting them to the event with a Facebook event-post.

The money used to purchase tickets to the event will sponsor the event and also serve as funding for the newly rescued penguins or seabirds. At the event, each family will receive one penguin plushie, courtesy of the sanctuary and Volkswagen. At the event itself, there will also be an exhibition, in the form of a wordless children’s book. By getting these families to a family-fun event at the sanctuary, they will associate the APSS with good times, and therefore be in a good spirit towards the brand.
