American Urological Association Prostate Screening Recommendations
Dr. Sarat Sabharwal concurrently performs robotic and cosmetic surgery as a staff physician for Health Orlando Inc. and leads courses at the University of Central Florida. Dr. Sarat Sabharwal is also a member of the American Urological Association (AUA), a professional organization that develops industry guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of urological disorders.

In 2013, the AUA revised its recommendation for routine prostate cancer screenings. The guidelines advocated against universal screening for asymptomatic men without a family history of prostate cancer.

The changes came after the results of a decade-long trial involving more than 300,000 men across nine countries showed that the most common screening method, prostate-specific antigens, can produce false positives.

As a result, the AUA doesn’t recommend PSA screening for men older or younger than the highest-risk age group, which is between 55 and 69 years old. The AUA recommends that men who have a family history of prostate cancer or who are in the high-risk age range make the decision to undergo testing after discussions with their doctors.
