Brief:
The goal is to create a 18" x 24" poster, featuring your favorite typeface. The poster needs to feature the typeface in a visually significant way. The poster must communicate what makes the typeface unique and sets it apart from others. The poster also must include a small description to introduce the typeface and give it some background.
Deliverable:
One high quality JPG file that showcases the design and 1 mock-up to show how it would look in an 18" x 24" frame.
Design Process:
I chose to construct my design around the Futura typeface. I firstly sought to understand the aspects that make the typeface unique and set it apart from other typefaces.
Futura is a sans-serif typeface that heavily relies on clean and bold geometric shapes.
I used this information to help construct the theme of the poster. I decided to use just
three letters (A, O and H) to visually communicate the hallmarks of this typeface. I
picked these respective letters to depict the use of triangles, circles and squares
within the typeface.
I placed a large letter “A” against the right side of the poster to give the word “Futura” a place on which to rest. I, then, placed a large letter “O” around the word. Composing the letter like this helps to present the clean circular stroke of the letter. It also assists in establishing the focal point of the poster and directs the eye directly to the typeface name. Finally, I placed a tilted letter “H” against the top left corner of the poster, to complete the design. I exposed some of the stem of the letter beneath the letter “O” to emphasize the illusion of 3D depth.
Since Futura is such a bold and geometric typeface, I wanted to emphasize those qualities by using bold colors and geometric shapes in the posters design. To keep with the bold theme of the poster, I applied a white drop shadow to the word “Futura” as this would add more dimensionality. I also decided to gradually decrease the size of each letter, going from the bottom right side of the poster to the top left side. I did this to emphasize the appearance of the letters receding into space.
