Layout & Background Art
The purpose of this project was to design a set of backgrounds inspired by a passage from George Orwell's 1984. We were to present a completed background (in both day and night) indicating light source and structural detailing. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate industry standard digital and non-digital skills as well as an ability to visually and conceptually explore ideas. When I began designing, I focused in on the phrases "rotting nineteenth-century houses" and "garden walls sagging" from the passage in order to drive my design. Pictured below are some rough thumbnail sketches I created in order to explore some off-topic general perspective, and then some more appropriate designs also.

Once I had a better idea of where I wanted to take the project, I drew up some larger layouts.
I then took one of these projects into photoshop and began to colour it digitally.
I really enjoyed working on the background design, as setting is everything when it comes to creating a story, however I didn't like the direction my background was going. It was at this point I began to reconsider the project and I became more interested in the destructive element of the provided written piece. ("heaps of rubble" and "bombed sites")
Ultimately I decided to take the background underground away from all the chaos. After deciding on a background it was time to take the image digital, explore some colour choices and create a finished day and night version of the image.
