Joie de Vivre - Joy of Living
Joie de Vivre - Joy of Living
(Screen printing project)

Created and designed following a spate of terror attacks against Paris, this print was intended to invoke a rebellious spirit in response to the attacks by encouraging a celebration of being alive: facing down terror by living. This was a very sensitive subject, the intention being to empower and move forwards rather than surrender. In designing it modern French iconography, news paper headlines and colours were employed, along with a small nod to the style of Charlie Hebdo.

The process involved creating the initial design, carving blocks, vectorising the carvings, creating screens and working to print it onto a number of surfaces. The Joir de Viv graphic was printed onto household materials (sheets, large sheets of textured card, wax paper etc.) to intentionally capture a crafty feeling, as if they had been made in / for a protest. It was finally included in a 'protest pack' style packaging, complete with a number of prints, badges and stickers. Screen printing was a new experience to me but one I found very rewarding.

Photos taken during the printing process, displaying experimentation with surfaces and colours.
The 'protest pack' tube, designed to be taken with you and used on the go - spot vinyl drawing the eye to key messages formed using real headlines.
This project stands out for me as being one of the most memorable, something to feel passionate about being able to represent whilst remaining mind-full and respectful of the immense sadness acts of terror cause the survivors.

Any and all feedback on this project would be welcome, I hope you enjoyed it!
Thank you
