Hydration in soccer matches is important as failure to do so can cause serious issues including muscle cramps, fatigue, and heatstroke. In connection, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, in April 2019, approved hydration breaks at designated periods for each half of soccer matches for the 2019-20 academic year. The rule applies to both men and women soccer. The NCCA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports provided the recommendation to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Rules Committee which was the basis of the proposal the rules committee submitted to the oversight panel.

The new rule sets into motion when the wet-bulb globe temperature reaches 86 degrees. The hydration breaks, lasting for a least 2 minutes, takes place between the 25-and 30-minute mark and the 70- and 75-minute mark of the first and second halves, respectively. All schools must have wet-bulb globe thermometers, with host personnel monitoring the temperature before and during the entire game. Referees will implement the hydration breaks and have the authority to allow additional breaks.
