Client: Auckland City Council

Project name: "Picnic in the park"

Role: Team member
- My role was to create assets for our application, be it illustrations, usability or problem solving.
Group: Michael, Melissa & Dan

Design problem:
-The local council are needing more young people to use local recreational facilities and get outdoors. They want an App for young people to use and engage with the local facilities in their area.

App purpose / Situation (How our app solved the design problem):
-The "Picnic in the park" app presents users with the opportunity to book a spot in a themed picnic event run through the local council parks.
The application was designed to target teenagers to young adults, to try and encourage them to use the councils provided facilities.

Design changes throughout the process:
1) When designing our application we have faced challenges, especially in regards to our health & safety and moral and ethical design choices.
Initially our preposed application allowed for the user to bring their own food items to the event, however upon review we felt as though this would present health risks as the food can not be properly tested and monitored.
As an example, dietary preferences may be at risk if something is labelled as "vegan" or "halal" or "Vegetarian" There is actually no way to check the food contents and there can be serious repercussions if the wrong food is consumed.
To combat this, we changed our concept to "Book" food instead of bring food, that way the council is in charge of creating the food and can be vigilant about this particular issue.

2) Smaller changes we have considered include appropriate colour and illustration type, we wanted to hit our target market and had to research illustration style and colours that were overall appropriate.
We decided to chose a water colour style based on user feedback & we also changed the vibrance of the colour pallet to help our design stand out more and meet a more aesthetically pleasing style for our target audience.

Design process: -

The team introduced themselves and assigned group roles based upon each members strengths and preferences.
"Scrum meetings" were to be set up either at the start of the morning or the end of the class to make sure that all group members thoughts were expressed and considered.

To solve our design problem we had to conceptualise an app, a theme and a purpose.
To do this the group initially brainstormed locations, council owned assets, our target audience and successful apps that are used by our target audience.

After researching the council owned assets we came to the conclusion that the council owned parks would be the best way to attract our target audience.
Once we had selected parks as the council owned assets the group came together to conceptualise a(n) event(s) where it was agreed that a communal picnic was the way to go.

With the applications purpose decided, the next step the group took was to decide on the content inside the application, we considered what pages we would require and wrote them down to get feedback from our target audience in regards to pages that were "necessary" and "unnecessary."
Once we had trimmed the fat (removed the unnecessary content) The group decided to go off and create lo-fi wireframes of the pages we required.

At the next scrum meeting the group presented their low-fi wireframes and reviewed each other's designs, taking the best parts of each wireframe to consider a final design style.
When the final layout style was agreed upon by the group different tasks were delegated to each member according to their preference and strengths.

I was tasked will creating illustrations and content for the pages that would be appropriate and inspired by our initial research. The illustrations ranged from foods to carnival tents to rubbish bins depending on the page I was designing for.
I created 3 different styles of illustrations and A/B tested them to find our desired style, ultimately the water colour illustrations won out, on the condition the vibrance of the colour pallet was adjusted.

Once our team had created their assigned content (the hi-fi wire frames, illustrations and the functions of the pages) we re-grouped and decided how to fit all the individual work we had done together in a final design.

Once the initial final design was completed in Sketch and was functional we sought feedback from our designer peers to see if we had overlooked anything, whether it be spelling, usability, aesthetic, moral or other so we could rationalise our design choices and make appropriate changes.

As described above, we had some serious issue raised about our food items which we addressed by changing our concept slightly to void it.
We have also considered and A/B tested our colour choices for our buttons as there were some questions raised with the initial colour choice.

Once we responded to our feedback, considered and made the appropriate changes to the final design we worked on extra content in our presentation documents and hand in files.

Group feedback:

Working with Michael and Melissa has been an absolute treat.
Our group was able to effectively communicate with one and other and capitalise on each of our strengths throughout the design process.
The group has been polite and efficient in our design process and I believe the final design reflects the pride and quality each group member has brought with them in this project.

Michael's sharp eye for design has been especially helpful in the project, he has been able to keep the group on track and delegate tasks effectively.
All of his work has been effective and eye catching with strong design principles applied every step of the way.
He has also been efficient in keeping the group's time management on track and his communication and remarks on his team mates work has been effective and positive.

Melissa's effort and quality of work can speak for itself, she has been absolutely amazing in her thorough research and the quality of the hand in and presentation documents be on full display during our presentation.
She also absolutely smashed out the final design of our application on sketch.
Mellisa has capitalised on her role in the team and has been a more than necessary edition to the team.
