4'33"
An ode to silence
The places we encounter as silent spaces actually are filled with secret compositions, only to be heard by those who actually listen. We were fascinated by these silent noises — which are often ignored in our hectic lives — and explored the possibilities to transform them into both visual and audible designs.
We recorded three ‘silent’ spaces: Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the North Sea and a silence coupe in a train, and converted them into musical compositions. Every record was 4’33”, referring to the famous composition by John Cage. Both the original sounds and the corresponding compositions were pressed into vinyl records. Eventually, we designed the accompanying sleeves and music scores, so the whole visual and audible process could be experienced. This project won the Sint Joost Penning in 2013 and was selected for the Fontanel Finals.
