Observational Drawing - Contour Lines

Art 121: Observational Drawing
Professor: Chad Eggar
This project began with creating six, small compositions focusing on different portions of our still life. The purpose of these was to allow us to practice different elements and skills, like foreshortening, before approaching the final composition. After this I completed 10 compositional thumbnails and after examining many different views I chose this one. The many different materials present, as well as the different interacting heights is why I chose to pursue this layout. I enjoyed working with the geometric shapes of the cube the shoe was sitting on, as well as the paper bags. I was able to grid out the foundation for the bags and then distort them to the rounded edges they actually had. One of the biggest challenges I faced was trying to make it clear that the vase behind the bags was clear glass. I kept my line weight light and had the contour of the fabric fold within the vase. I also tried to show how the light interacted with objects like the bag on the left and the shoe to have a large range of line weights and shades.
