Design // Chili Oil Label

A personal project taken to heart and a label that rivalled the quality of mom’s delicious hot chili oil. This is a Mama Ma & I collaboration project.

The design came about from my Chinese heritage and my last name: Ma, which directly translates to horse. I wanted to create a clean minimal design that you could easily see in an upscale food store in North America but still incorporated my Chinese heritage. And so, the color scheme is mainly beige and red, with some black for text.

The base beige color is often a color seen in ancient scrolls.

The red is used because it is an eye catching color that is associate with hot/heat but also symbolizes good fortune, joy and happiness.

The ink wash drawn horse is a direct translation of my last name: Ma. Horses are often the subject for art and seen in traditional ink wash drawings.

Everything was homemade and created out of love, inside out. We created a small limited-run batch to give to family and close friends.
