I started this project reflecting on typical American sofas, all over-stuffed, lumpy, and full of deep cracks to loose change in. They are so familiar, and yet they are actually quite strange. The design was influenced by this overstuffing, lumpiness and strangeness. The padded shapes running down the front are mirrored by the unpadded, hard lines of the back ribs of the back.
Moreover, this couch is an imperfect prototype that has helped me understand the necessary design strategies, materials, and processes that are required for commercial production. I used majority natural, long-lasting materials such as natural latex foam and hardwood poplar.
