The Best Fly-In Destinations in the U.S.

Many people choose to become a pilot for the opportunity to travel wherever and whenever they want. Pilots have freedom at their fingertips to pack up and travel somewhere new.  If you have access to a small plane, there are thousands of public and private airports around the country for you to explore. With so many destinations to choose from, it can be hard to pick where to go next. Here are just a few of the best fly-in destinations in the U.S.

Head to the Monument Valley in Utah for breathtaking views of the American southwest. The desert plain is known for its red sand, tall buttes, and deep canyons. The area is rich in ancient culture which can still be seen through the remaining building, structures, and art. Visit the Navajo Nation Tribal Park to learn more about their history and way of life. There are tons of hiking and camping opportunities nearby, as well. Access this beautiful area through Goulding’sprivate airstrip and resort, which is just a few miles from most of the scenic stops. Permission is required before landing, so be sure to call ahead and have a copy of your aircraft insurance ready to send. The airstrip sits at an elevation of 5,192 feet. The runway can prove to be a little challenging at 4,000 feet long and uphill when arriving. Make sure to bring tie downs, chocks, and fuel for your departure home. Reservations for the lodge at Goulding’s book quickly, so make sure you plan your trip far enough in advance.

What is better than a spontaneous weekend trip to the beach? Fly into Key West to enjoy white sand beaches, clear waters, and sunny skies. Key West provides a great opportunity to fill your Caribbean adventure need while staying local. With tons of activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing or kayaking,  it’s pretty difficult not to enjoy yourself at this destination. There are also tons of options for shopping, art galleries, and museums if you need to get out of the sun. Jamaican culture has a lot of influence in this area which you’ll find throughout the many restaurants and grills. When flying into Key West, note that there is no radio operator permit requirement.

One of the most beautiful places to visit especially in the fall season is the Adirondacks in New York state. Marvel at the sight of fall foliage that expands across the mountains throughout the area. Tune out from technology and explore nature through the hundreds of trails available. The area is surrounded by tons of places to stay including unique lodges, cottages, and Inns. You’ll also find several resorts scattered throughout this mountainous region. Pilots are thrilled that Lake Placid Airport has fuel and maintenance onsite through Adirondack Flying Service. You can even land a seaplane on one of the many lakes in the area.
