Design for All - Final degree Project

This is my final degree project, wich took place in 2014. The objective of it was to create a new product design methodology that follows the guidelines of Design for All, which advocates the design of products that can be used by as many users as possible without adaptations, integrating the needs of all users without distinction.
To this end, a preliminary study on Design for All was carried out, compiling success stories and also related methodologies, which would help to propose a new methodological model. The principles that govern Design for All were studied, as well as the capabilities of the human being, and finally three Design for All methodologies: the H.U.M.B.L.E.S. method (probably the best known, by Francesc Aragall), an Inclusive Design Toolkit conceived by the University of Cambridge, and a study on usability associated with Design for All made by the University of Kyushu.

Taking these methods as an example, and gathering the best of each one of them, a new methodology that combines general tasks and phases of any product design process with specific design phases for usability was devised. Subsequently, a specific case with a real need to apply the new methodological model was search, with the aim of create products that facilitate daily tasks for the entire population through a specific problem.
For this purpose, a local non-profit association was contacted, and through an interview session with their occupational therapist, a series of problems that were generally shared by people with the type of disabilities that the association deals with were clarified, among which one of the most interesting was the action of dosing toothpaste on the toothbrush.

With a problem to be solved, each of the steps detailed in the methodology on the specific case was carried out, until arriving at the definition of a product that satisfies the specific needs discussed with the association and that facilitates the daily task of brushing teeth for all users.
The product’s Corporate Identity was also designed, as well as its communication strategy, as it is necessary to disseminate this type of products because they hardly have any repercussions today.
