INFLUENCING EMOTIONS TASK

Introduction
The task is about two research models; Yerkes Dodson's law and Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow Model. The objectives are to use the two models on how a game that we selected which we never played before is able to successfully help in increasing our performance and create state of flow. Moreover, to analyze to what extend does it damage our performance.

The Game: Until Dawn (Horror, Adventure)
The game is about eight friends trapped in a remote mountain retreat, Blackwood Mountain and they are not alone.  Overwhelmed by fear, with tensions running high, they must fight through the night if they all hope to make it alive until dawn.

The game let us play as each of the eight characters and each character has different choices to make in order to proceed. Every decision we make has different terrifying outcome between death or alive. The actions we made will decide who will survive.

Yerkes Dodson's law
According to Yerkes Dodson's law, the relationship between arousal level and performance is related to given task difficulties to be completed.

The difficulty level of task, consists of 3, high-medium-low.

Based on research, the medium task level gave the highest performance in order to be completed. while, if the task given is too difficult or too easy, the performance in fact decrease.

Having experience to play PS4 game (until the dawn) we feel like brought into the story which was not playing the game anymore. We were being being fused trough the plot. the 3D realistic environment success to give us emotion, and in some thriller part, we were just anxious. we almost forgot that we were playing game.

If we relate the Yerkes’s law, with this experience, honestly, in term of task be given to gain arousal, we think that the task is not so difficult, and not too easy. we didn’t feel like to complete the task, look likes the task was not compulsary to be completed. We even not realized that there was a tasks to do. Until some sign gave us cues to get concern to somewhere.

We conclude, based on Yerkes law, this PS4 game (until the dawn) just low arousal based on the difficulties level of game but had the high emotion boost based on storyline.

Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow Model
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi describes that people are happiest when they are in the state of complete concentration and utterly engaged in the activity they are carrying out. This Flow is equal to the feeling of being “in the zone”. The Flow Model of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi represents the emotional state someone can be while undertaking a task or activity. The Flow Model can make an excellent contribution on the work floor and it can create improvement and increase effectiveness.

To relate this Flow Model, In the early chapter of the game: I find it intriguing to keep going as it creates a sense of suspense. The game gives different outcome for different choices that I made so it also makes me curious of the outcome of the other possible choices. Basically it does satisfy the state of flow theory by Csikszentmihalyi.

As I go on, the story gets more interesting hence I find it very exciting and addictive. It feels surreal at some point because it makes me think of what to do as if it happens in real life.

Lastly, I either succeeded in keeping all 8 characters alive or I might need to sacrifice some of them in order to survive. It makes me want to replay the game to change my strategy so that I will be able to keep all of them alive which I still feel disappointed now because I haven’t reach that goal yet.
