Biomimicry for Designers - Book Packaging & 3 Exhibits

Book Packaging & Exhibit Design For The Book "Biomimicry For Designers" By Thames & Hudson
This projects was a semester long, collaboration assignment intended to teach the class about the design, research, and manufacturing processes in the real world of packaging and exhibit design. The packaging design pulled direct inspiration from the Airless tire and honeycomb structure article from the book. The requirement for the exhibit was to create an experience that related to the theme of the book/packaging, spark interest in the book, be able to display 100 books while storing 400 unseen books, and manage three different size configurations.
Packaging
6 x 6 x 8
This kiosk format is divided into four display sections which contain something that relates to the theme. One section is compiled of display books. Another section is a sculptural piece that is an rubber airless tire on one side and a solid hexagon. The third section is a video monitor that shows image examples of the different articles in the book. The final section is a stack of display books on top of a solid aluminum beam that rests on a die cut, honeycomb, chipboard structure, which shows the strength of the honeycomb structure. Under each display section is a 3' x 3' storage drawer filled with one hundred books each.
10 x 10 x 8
This design consists of a walk in/around experience. Books are displayed around the perimeter and are lit with a blue light from the banner above. Insider there are four monitors that shows high resolution examples of articles explained in the book. On the back interior wall shows the chipboard honeycomb structure, holding the metal beam and the stack of display books. Beneath the two side display shelves on the interior, you will find the storage cabinets for the remaining books for sale.
20 x 10 x 8
The largest configuration of the three. The chipboard, honeycomb structure shows again but this time it is the base for the storage cases/display counters. The main wall holds a pattern of hexagon display shelves filled with ten books each. Some cases in the set are solid white, while others are clear, blue, acrylic. This display set up is meant to play on the idea of the bee hive in nature being integrated into trees. In the center lies the main info monitor that flips through various high resolution images of the book's article examples while you listen to an explanation via the speakers on the side. The large, geometric tree doubles as open storage for books and back lighting to enhance the visual experience.
