Abstract Composition

1) Understand the problem
An abstract photo does not directly reside with an object and usually shows texture, simple shapes, etc., to create a quality composition.
What is the goal of your art?
To create a composition using strong and creative abstract techniques.

2) Research and investigate
-Bill Gracey
-Man Ray
-Use different depth of fields to create focuses
-Use patterns for a composition
-Use shadows and highlights to create more of a dimension

3) Generate possible solutions
Water, table, couch outside, fence, deck railing, bottle, book, can, fire, smoke, glow sticks, keyboard, oil, sparklers, beads, bubbles, foam, glasses, chairs, locks, keys, spokes on wheels, umbrella, tree bark, buildings, string, light bulbs, coins, maps, stickers, windows, paint, rocks, fruits, veggies, food dye, mirrors, broken glass, smoke bombs, chalk, medals, wire, shadows, sports balls, ornaments, markers, glitter, dust, folded towels

4) Select and develop best solution
-Different color wires in different light to get shadows
-Oil with flashlight on black top in high lighting
-Crinkled up map with low light, but flashlights underneath
-Beads with different colored lights
-Books with water spilled on the pages (picture book)
-Colored chalk with dark light, with lighting underneath
-Food coloring and water

5) Model and prototype
-I chose to do food coloring and water because it can easily tie in color while at the same time not making two photos the same. With food coloring I can use shapes with implied texture among many more elements.

6) Test and evaluate

7) Produce
-I would say this project was generally successful for me. The food coloring photos turned out better than I thought. The white back round with a bumpy texture really emphasized the contrast between the colors and the back round. The food coloring had lines which really added to the composition, instead of just having bland swirls. The tissues were very bland before the light room, but the color adjustments were very helpful in creating contrast and depth. I was impressed with how the tissues were able to look three dimensional instead of flat, this was especially shown through the contrast changes.
