StoryCorps, Chicago Cultural Center

With a recording booth and permanent story-gathering space already in the Chicago Cultural Center,
we were hired by StoryCorps to rethink the public’s experience of their facility and create a more welcoming, intuitive and informative one. Our intent was to bring the visitors into a one-on-one encounter with the faces and voices of those whose stories were on record, which would in turn help them feel
more comfortable and unthreatened about the prospect of telling their own story. To achieve this,
we not only created interactive soundscapes, an additive wall of the faces and a write-on comment wall but also, lowered the ceiling, re-did the lighting and repainted the space for a more intimate experience.
The space opened to the public in June 2014 to great success, and StoryCorps plans to use
this space as a model for other recording spaces throughout the country.
