Why Is Cardio Vital In Boxing?
Isn’t the point of boxing to punch so hard that you knock the other guy out? Well, that’s one strategy that can be effective if you think about it. But boxing is a lot more complicated than that.
If your opponent keeps throwing massive haymakers in big bulky swings, they are more likely to run out of steam within minutes and taking them down would be a breeze. Stamina, in boxing, is just as important as hitting the opponent. That’s why cardio is vital when it comes to the sport.
Stamina you get from intense cardiovascular exercises goes a long way in most sports, and boxing is not an exception. In a sport where a fight can drag on for 12 3-minute rounds, running out of stamina is tantamount to losing the fight. That’s why some strategies are built around letting your opponent waste their stamina, and some fighters prepare for a fight by increasing theirs so they can go the distance.
Cardio exercises do more than just building stamina. They also help with one’s breathing. Breathing techniques are essential in keeping your stamina up during a fight. If done incorrectly, a boxer could get tired quickly. Running, climbing stairs and other cardio exercises are all great cardio exercises that can both build stamina and help hone one’s breathing techniques.
