Funerals are a crucial folk culture in Taiwan and have been influenced by Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. However, the funerary rites have gradually changed with time and urbanization. Accordingly, we investigated the origins of these funerary rites and explored the implications of the origins.
During the process of investigation, we reported that the funeral culture in Taiwan has shifted its focus from the external appearances of the rituals to individuals’ internal feelings for the deceased. In response to the needs of contemporary funerals in Taiwan, we withdrew from the negative impressions people have expressed toward death and extracted design elements and colors from the traditional Taiwanese funeral culture such as burlap, paper lotus, and plastic flowers.
These design elements were integrated with the Chinese characters commonly associated with Taiwanese funerals such as “diao” (to mourn for the deceased) and “dian” (to pay homage to the deceased). Subsequently, the “Diao Series: Taiwanese Funeral Handbooks” and the “Dian Series: Remember Me Wooden Memorial Box” were designed. Through the application of contemporary visual design technologies, the characteristics of traditional Taiwanese funerals were incorporated into these design works, which signify the new-generation funeral culture in Taiwan.
Taiwanese Funeral Culture Book
The book is based on the nature of education.Millennials, we become the organizer of the funeral，there is a basic knowledge of basic funeral culture and customs.
Among Taiwan’s funeral, relatives and friends will gather in the Funeral Hall, everyone origami lotus and chat, everybody will talk about the deceased’s good memories in each of us.Therefore, our designers retained the custom of origami lotus and added the whole funeral process and customs after the arrangement. The front of Lotus Paper is a cultural introduction to the graphic and text, the back is the design of lotus paper, and the entire book reads every A page can be torn off and folded into a paper lotus
The convenience of reading by way of origami lotus, Hope not to be deceived by the funeral industry, and not to hear the spread of unproven seniors or folk beliefs.
