Fire extinguishers are intimidating to most people because they have never used them. Their design language communicates caution and danger which makes most people fearful of handling them. This fear and extreme communication causes most fire extinguishers to be hidden away, out of sight, and out of reach if a fire suddenly occurs. Fires double in size every sixty-seconds which means accessibility is critical in an emergency. The goal of this project was to re-contextualize the fire extinguisher from a safety utility to a home appliance that matches the design language of the kitchen. The extinguisher would live on the kitchen counter top, unobtrusive when not in use. When in use, key areas like the safety pin would be clearly visible and the handle would show an obvious trigger. These improvements make the extinguisher easy to use and present when needed.
