First described in the 1950s, the Vira Lata Complex is a phenomenon coined by Nelson Rodrigues. In English, Vira Lata means Mutt. It refers to the self-imposed inferiority that many Brazilians feel and act upon, in comparison to other peoples and each other. As a Brazilian-American, I find great interest in dissecting what drives my identity. I used the same striped style seen in my skull as the typography. It is meant to capture shape with negative space and form an appearance of cohesion as one icon. I designed and completed this piece in Adobe Illustrator and it was based on a preliminary sketch.
