This is a personal project created from taking Jessica Hische's Skillshare class. I chose to make a drop cap book cover for one of my favorite books, White Oleander by Janet Fitch.

It's a coming-of-age story of a girl, Astrid, who has an aesthete for a mother, Ingrid. The story starts with Ingrid falling in love with a man, who leaves her for another woman. As revenge, Ingrid murders him using white oleander poison.

Astrid then gets transferred to several foster homes, each with its own worlds and own rules. She learns about different aspects of human life, all the while exchanging letters with her mother in prison in a span of 6 years.

My concept for the cover is inspired by the phrase 'mother is in jail, but daughter is in prison'. I chose the double-edged sword to symbolize the mother-daughter relationship that is highlighted throughout the book.
