The Collectors

This project started from an old lovely grandfather that I met in Leeds. He created his own cute outfit  by snitching different cloth together. After that I saw a documentary about different collections. One of the collectors, an old solitary man looking like the grandfather I met in Leeds, is a big fan of gnomes.

After watching the documentary, I did some research on why people would hoard so many things. The reason turns out to be Compulsive Hoarding. And it can be aroused by different factors, for instance, the inner insecurity, the emotional attachment to the objects or  lifelong frugality. So I chose three representative figures corresponding with different factors and collections. And the three figure is my grandparents, myself and my friend.
Through the experiment and researching more artists’ work, I have the idea to use epoxy to simulate the meaning of collection. After the former collections analysis of three subjects, I pick out some representative icons and draw them down.  I froze those small icons in some cubes or capsules. I produced a plenty of cubes to build  a magic square. Using yellow as the main hue to demonstrate the feeling which collecting brings us.
Next are my three final pieces.
size: 53cm*76cm
FINAL1: Using the shape of Chinese mortise and tenon joint to represent my grandparents.
FINAL2: My friend's personality is like a disco ball which can shine on her collections.
FINAL3: The shape of womb represents the security that collections can bring people.
Thanks for watching!
