My new painting Nightingale, for the 'POW! WOW! Exploring the New Contemporary Movement' group exhibition, curated by Andrew Hosner from Thinkspace Projects.

I get questioned very often about the inspiration behind my artworks. While the answer always varies, it is usually influenced by a subject or issue that I was drawn to at the moment.

I had came across a tragic case in the past year of a young Taiwanese author who had killed herself shortly after the publishing of her first novel. It tells a harrowing story of rape and abuse between an underage girl and her teacher. The author's novel and suicide had stirred up a nationwide controversy when her parents disclosed that the story was written based on her personal painful experience.

Despite police investigations and social uproars, her rapist remains unindicted. What the case did bring about, was heightened public awareness of the rape culture in Taiwan, and also the establishment of new laws to better protect children.

Nightingale, is a tribute to the talented writer, who amidst all her sufferings, wrote beautifully and courageously.

This painting is now on view at the Honolulu Museum of Art School as part of this year's POW! WOW! Hawaii Mural Festival.
