Multifunctional building
Burgos, Spain
The project for the multifunctional building had to include several requirements. On one hand, the program was very extensive: a youth area, a cultural center and a library were the principal pieces, combined with a cafe-restaurant, an exposition area and the reception. On the other hand, the building area was rather small and the heights were limited by bylaws to five, so the building had to be very compact.
As the ensemble had to distinguish between different areas with different uses, it was decided to create a system of access with two entries at different levels, which permitted to enter the youth area and the cultural center separately, and gave the chance of having one more level in the semi-basement.
The shape of the building is due to the decision of making three different platforms to lodge the three principal areas of the program. With this system of platforms, each area could have a pedestrian overpass as an extension of the inner space.
The constructive systems and the orientation of the building pretend to follow the bioclimatic standards.  The principal façade south-, takes advantage of the natural illumination at the same time it improves the inside climatisation with a double glass skin. The northern façade is more hermetic and the system used permits a good isolation.
