Exhibition at KISD (Köln International School of Design) - 27th October 2017

When it comes to the topic of homelessness, we can talk about many aspects of our reality as human beings and how are we connected to each other as part of the same society in the political, economic, social, cultural, ideological, etc.

Defensive Architecture or, as it is also called, Hostile Architecture, is only one of the difficulties a person who is forced by the circumstances to sleep on the streets has to suffer and overcome every day. It is something that was considered, designed, approved and implemented specifically as a mechanism against homeless people and ironically, it does not even achieve its basic goal of making us feel safer. We are fighting against the poor with violence, and I do not say against the poverty because this is definitely something personal.
About the process
As my idea was that the "defensive doormat" would be used as many times as possible.
I had to ideate a system which allowed me to put the first layer down momentarily when someone stepped on it and put it up again when the person stepped out of the doormat. The process of building this was more complex as I thought. After trying a lot of times placing foam in different corners, I decided to mix this also with paper folded as origami in the borders which could act as a spring. Finally, it worked!
Is the contempt for the poor which lead us, as a society, to this kind of atrocities which can be also visualized in the fact that 47% homeless in Spain suffered at least once in his/her life, of a hate crime incident (according to http://hatento.org/).
