The Silika lamps were conceived during a lighting project in which we were tasked with designing and making a free-standing lamp able to move on two axes for under ZAR350 (+-$25). I was able to make two lamps within the budgetary restrictions by using the most humble and affordable materials available: local pine shutter ply, concrete, 6mm mild steel bar and papier-mâché. There are no moving parts since the user is able to redirect the light by simply toppling the entire lamp onto a different surface. Each lamp is roughly 400mm tall if stood on its bottom point.
