This banner tells the story of Mount Bromo in Indonesia. The legend tells the story of a young couple who are wanting to grow their family. However, they cannot conceive, so they pray to the mountain gods for help. The gods bless them with many children, but they must sacrifice their 25th child to the crater as a trade off for the blessing. The couple does not want to give up their last child, but the gods threaten that they will cover the land with fire if they do not follow their promise. The parents sacrifice the child, but the mountain gods were still angry. To appease the gods, the community holds a ceremony at the base of the mountain on the anniversary. They travel to the crater on the 14th day with many offerings to the gods.
This pattern exploration tells the story of what that land might have become to look like if the child was not sacrificed. What if the land was cursed with the fire and all the living things were affected?
