Helvetica on The Rails is a type installation that highlights the importance of the Helvetica typeface and its use on the MBTA. The typeface was incorporated into the overall aesthetics of the train system to provide easy to read directions to riders.
With my installation, I hope to amuse the viewer and educate them about the importance and simple beauty of Helvetica, an ever present but often overlooked typeface.
The installation plays with shape and size to give emphasis to the letters. The plain walls of the stations provide a blank canvas that can be seen by a large number of viewers.
At each location, the space allows for the viewer to separate from others and really connect with the typeface. The colors vary depending on the T stop, with the colors in each installation matching that particular train line.
The point of the installation is to stop viewers in their tracks and to spread general awareness about Helvetica and typography. Hopefully the viewer will be left with a new perspective.
