'Monochromatic' - Jesmonite Necklace

Choosing to endeavour into the world of jewellery I took to researching within 'View' Magazine Issue #116 looking at current and future trends. From within I picked up on a masculine, monochrome style becoming more apparent which I felt had impact, a visual language and made a clear statement. I selected this array of images as my core design inspiration and combined it with the medium of Jesmonite.
High-res scans of my monochrome Jesmonite samples.
Through experimentation I was able to produce these two samples which contrasted equally and complemented the images within View. Through the addition of man-made and organic materials I created two very different, raw looks with one being matt and the other shiny. Together the combination worked cohesively and presented a powerful aesthetic.
This was my first initial sketch focusing on the use of  basic geometric shapes and strong, clean lines.
I wanted to create a minimal design that echoed quality and precise craftsmanship so I set about developing and exploring simple forms that could be worn comfortably and with a variety of styles. Practicality, diversity and individuality were key things I wanted the piece to be and so I decided simplicity was the best route forward.
Through CAD I was able to develop a range of designs quickly using scanned textures from my Jesmonite samples. I began simple and then applied the additional brass to create a divide between the two varied Jesmonite forms.
From my initial design I took the idea forward, applying textures taken from my original samples, and illustrated a range of concepts ranging from minimal to more decorative.
The final two concepts developed through feedback. I selected the first design to take forward into production.
I felt the brass added another element of quality to my design and would help differentiate my piece as an accessory when placed against other clothing textiles and garments.

From my final selection I took the idea forward in to manufacture, creating the piece by hand through moulding, sanding, refining and applying the brass layer.

To continue the look I created a brown leather and brass fastened cord.
Impactful. Modern. Masculine. Statement.
