Core Group Aquatic Illustrations

For this project I was commissioned to produce a two page mailer illustration series for a graphic art studio called the Core Group. These two conceptual illustrations should be 7”X5” in dimension and each design must represent one of the two following terms: Contact and Create. The designs should construct the terms into a visual metaphor that is in a distinct graphic style with repeating stylistic elements or theme to create unity among both designs. The conceptual terms must also be typographically incorporated into both illustrations. For my two page mailer illustration series I decided to have an aquatic/ ocean related animals theme for my designs. The graphic style of the illustrations were digitally painted with semi-realistic aspects and have a similarly pale toned color palette. The color choices where also decided by the fact that all of the chosen animals for both designs had similar colors on their bodies and in their habitats. To represent the word “contact” I illustrated a lobster holding a cell phone in it’s claws and texting, this displays contact through technology and social media. To depict the word “Create” I rendered an octopus because I wanted to utilize it’s many legs by making the octopus multi-task on different forms of art such as: painting, crocheting, cake decorating, and photography. The inspiration behind the theme was due to how uniquely shaped and colorful the animals that live in and around water are, which I thought would make for interesting conceptual illustrations of the two given words. Although the vibrancy and variety of color in aquatic habitats is part of what inspired my design
I chose a saturated color palette so that the focus would be on the word being portrayed in the design instead of the view’s attention being diverted by too much vibrancy.
