In 2011, theUSDA awarded AquaBounty $494,000 to continue research on genetically modifiedsalmon, which grows to a mature size at twice the natural rate. If approved bythe FDA, salmon would become the first genetically modified animal allowed ontoAmerican dinner plates.

In 2010, 86percent of U.S. corn was genetically engineered. Including GM soy, canola, andcottonseed oil, it is estimated that upwards of 70 percent of processed foodson supermarket shelves include GM ingredients.

In 2011, theUSDA allowed the planting of GM beets without an environmental impactstatement. More than 90 percent of sugar beets grown in the U.S. are nowgenetically modified, making up 54 percent of U.S. sugar.
