I took my inspiration from the traditional rain stick. They have been used in many cultures, such as Mexican, Southeast Asian, Australian and African, to mimic the sound of rain falling and to pray for rain to come .
I filled a long drawing tube with tiny charcoal pieces that resemble the traditional beans in a rain stick. I cut a couple pieces of paper to the length of the tube and rolled them up inside the tube. I then practiced different ways of moving the tube to transform sound into visual output. As I was rocking the tube back and forth, I imagined the lines to be continuous. I shook the tube in a spiral motion, and I imagined the drawing to be a spiral in the inner tube. At the same time, I listened to the sound created by the charcoal pieces.

A little while later, I opened it and pulled out the drawings. The resulting pattern resembled raindrops splashing on the ground. There were barely any continuous lines, because although I was controlling the movement of the tube, the way the charcoal pieces moved inside was out of my control. The density of the charcoal markings appeared thicker at the end of the tube compared to those at the center.
Thank you :)
