For my Fall 2016 semester, I took a Letterpress class, where I got to utilize a CMP press and hand presses experimenting with wood and metal type to create different projects.
WOW - Experimenting wood type, I used a CMP press to apply three different layers of letterforms. Through each application, a different color was used, where the viewer can see each overlay, creating a different color and see the interaction between each layer.
Postcard Mashup- I wanted to create my parent’s joke, “Back in my day,” through mashing up different layers of visuals and the quote. Utilizing a CMP press, I was able to apply different layers of vintage machines, tools, people, and transportation used back in the day. Lastly, I added the quote to finish off the piece.
Coasters - I wanted to incorporate my cultural heritage into these coasters to represent each of my siblings that consisted of six different coasters. Therefore I used a CMP press to apply a blind emboss with these traditional Chinese characters into the circular coasters. I created linocuts to represent each of my siblings’ Chinese Zodiac animal, where I pressed each animal on the blind embossed coaster.
Smiles - For this larger broadside, we were to find a quote that we wanted to create by experimenting with large and small type. The quote I have chosen, “Everyone smiles in the same language,” where I wanted to have smiles to stand out to the viewer. Therefore, I experimented with the word by overlapping the letterforms through two different layers. This piece was selected to be featured in the Juried Student Exhibition in March 2017.
Christmas Card - For this particular project, students had the creative freedom to create a design for their Christmas card. For awhile, I have been interested in pattern design where I wanted to incorporate it into my drawing. My drawing is an ornament filled with leaves and berries. My drawing was then scanned into a vector file that would be made into a metal casting on a wood block to make a letterpress plate to produce cards in the letterpress studio.
