Applied Arts, established in 1986, is Canada’s longest running independent magazine of visual communications. Each issue features in-depth profiles on creatives; curated portfolios; industry-related columns; and juried annuals in design, advertising, interactive, photography and illustration. In celebration of their 30th anniversary, Applied Arts entrusted us with redesigning and revitalizing the magazine to appeal to a new generation of readers. We completely overhauled the design, developing a flexible, new grid; a robust typographic system; and a contemporary masthead that pays homage to the original one from 1986. Working closely with the editor, we developed each issue from the initial stage of planning and content curation, through to the art direction, design and layout of columns, portfolios and features.
