Island in Winter

Island in Winter
A trip to Cushing's Island during a real Maine nor'easter is a unique experience shared by a few lucky and hardy Mainers.
Leaving South Portland into a nor'easter. On a clear day we can see Cushing's Island beyond the Spring Point Lighthouse.
Steady at the helm.
Casco Bay Lines ferry was the only other boat out there.
Safely arrived at Spring Cove, Cushing's Island.
Looking beyond Peaks Island, thankful for the protection from heavy surf.
Winter is a good time for Danny to finish indoor jobs like building screen windows.
The day after the storm Danny, the island caretaker heads back to work with Maddie.
Maddie has to wait outside while Danny works on home renovations.
Danny's "Sunset Cruise" where he traverses the island to check on homes and how they weathered the storm.
Danny's footsteps are typically the only ones on the island in winter.
Danny's work day is done and time to warm up at the caretaker's cottage.
The temperature falls to 10 degrees as soon as the sun sets.
Always good to have binoculars at the ready for checking out passing ships or birds.
Time for tea and maybe cribbage if lucky enough to have a visitor.
