INFLATABLE TROPHY - giant write-on trophy [2011]

The Inflatable Trophy was a product concept that came out of a Bluw design team brainstorming session. We had narrowed down the success of our inflatables to making large items sellable in a compact retail environment; making caricature products that were larger than life; and creating a cheap version of otherwise expensive items for use in novelty buying scenarios. Lifting big trophies had only been the honour of premiership footballers, but what if we could create a customisable giant inflatable trophy.
We played around with many designs - we hoped to be able to create a hollow cup, but the cost of the material and welded seem structure was too much for the market, so we had to accept the flat-top option. The base was also important. We had tried an inflated ring, but this didn't work very well, and the separate section cost too much. To give a flat surface, a thick piece of cardboard had been sealed between 2 layers of PVC. This provided a perfect base, but limited the foldability of the deflated product and mad wit too big for our standard inflatable packaging box size. We came up with the solution of splitting the card in 2, so it was foldable, however the base construction then had to be adjusted to stop the trophy leaning forward or backwards.
The packaging artwork was based on the same style guide as the original Beehive and Elvis giant inflatable wigs, but under the new "Air Hedz" giant inflatable brand.
