Brief: As part of my 2nd semester curriculum at NID (National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad), we were asked to make an ad film between 45 - 60 seconds to sell a Fire Extinguisher to middle class Indian families. The budget for the same was INR 3000 and we were given a day with all the required equipment to shoot the same.
Ad film: Since the brief stated that one had to sell the Fire Extinguisher to middle class Indian families, I set my film around Diwali, a festival celebrated across the country with a lot of potential dangers. There are diyas (traditional Indian lamp) and firecrackers all over homes, inside and outside and every year there are reports of mishaps due to these.
I felt that Diwali would be a perfect set up to get the Fire Extinguisher into the common man's living room. A strange place for it to be in. As per records, few or no Indian homes a Fire Extinguisher. But there is a tradition to buy something new like an electrical appliance or a vehicle on Diwali. So instead of the demands of the various people in the house, the man of the house brings home a Fire Extinguisher. This makes all the family members unhappy and angry as they see no need for a Fire Extinguisher.
The ad film tries to sell a rather important product in a lighthearted manner.
