400 years of Shakespeare

23rd April 2016 was the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. To celebrate and show how relevant and contemporary the words of Shakespeare can be in a modern typographic treatment, The Poetry Society commissioned Middlesex University students to create stunning pieces of modern typography based on quotes chosen from Shakespeare’s sonnets and plays. The only specification was the format, a 500mm X 500mm square.

The produced pieces that were selected were framed and then form part of an exciting exhibition held in The Poetry Society Gallery in Covent Garden, that coincide with the anniversary. The piece with stripes was one of the chosen to be at the exhibition and the other version was an alternative one. This project was tutored by Phil Healey, at Middlesex University as part of the second year of Graphic Design, 2015-2016.
